about

As the outback of South Australia was opened up, fully surveyed towns with park lands were planned in the midst of deserts. The speculators had come to play. In 1875 the township of Stephenston was proclaimed. It was believed that the railway would pass through it and as a consequence there was a rush to buy property there. John Henry Cahill, now 27 years old, bought up to half the town at various stages. Alas, the railways passed four miles to the south, the town never prospered and is now paddocks.
